Car Audio Newbie? Look here., October 18, 2015

If you’re anything like me, then you have no idea what you’re doing when it comes to car audio. So I thought I’d leave a few tips along with my review to save you some research time. (Bottom paragraph is the review portion)

-This radio is a single DIN (generic radio size for most cars) If the radio you are replacing is more than two inches in height, then you’ll also need to buy a dash kit to fit your radio slot from double to single DIN. You’ll also need to secure the metal sleeve that comes on the radio too your new dash kit.

-You’ll need a wire harness specific to your car model. This allows the power and speaker wires that come with the radio to connect with the speaker and power wires in your car. To do this, just match the colors of your radio wires to the colors of the wire harness wires. Either solder the ends together or wrap them around each other and put a protective cap on them. Also make sure you do this before you connect the harness to the car. Make sure you connect all the radio wires to the wire harness. There will likely be more wires on the harness than you’ll need. Ignore unused wires. Also sometimes your car will have more cables than the radio will need. Ignore them. This radio has a 4 channel output. This means it’ll only connect to four speakers. It has out puts for an amplifier as well, if you want to attach more speakers.

-Connect the wire harness and antenna wire to the back of the radio, and you’re good to go. Some people recommend you disconnect the battery to be safe.

    Review:
Great radio for the price. I was expecting a cheap plastic cover. I’m a trained competitive musician, and am quite pleased with the sound quality. A lot of people think the blue LED is too bright at night, in reality it’s far less bright than the headlights of oncoming traffic. The sleeve that comes with the radio is a little tricky to mount, but its nothing a little creativity won’t solve. I’ve also seen some reviews complaining of volume. The loudest output is 50W out of each speaker, which is more than loud enough to concern your doctor and anger your nicest neighbors. Don’t be that jerk face. Overall this radio is exactly what I expected for the money with a better sound quality than I thought.

Simply awesome. Ok, first, let’s be real. For $29 it’s not going to be high end and it’s not going to be feature packed, so we shouldn’t even go there. That’s an unreasonable expectation. But, it serve its niche very well.

I have a semi-beater truck that I use for weekend hauling. The radio someone else installed was garbage, despite being “high end”, so I bought this as a replacement. It works very well, and is (for the most part) very easy to use. Once you learn the gist of the settings, it’s reasonably intuitive. It’s very easy to install. I thought the instructions were fine, better than most similar type products, even.

It doesn’t play CDs, but so what? I’m using my phone more and more anyway. I didn’t think I’d need a USB or SD port, but am pleasantly surprised how convenient they each are. And since I usually do a “shuffle play” anyway, I’m not all that concerned with track order. I also appreciate 30 radio presets.

My only quibble is that it doesn’t play *.wav files, but that’s minor. Not enough to lose a star in my rating.

This isn’t the type of thing that I would need to buy often, but someday I will again (in a similar situation, not needing “high end”) and I’ll search for this model first. I would also not hesitate to recommend it to a friend, provided their niche need is similar to mine.

Good Little Unit for the Price!, January 1, 2016
    By

While it’s not as great as the Kenwood (from 2005) it replaced, it is worth the twenty seven bucks it sells for. It is light and easy to install, and with the SD Card I can store far more music than a pile of CD’s in my console will hold.

    PRO’s:
Price – can’t beat it for something that could easily be stolen (soft top Jeep Wrangler (YJ) with 1/2 doors).
Weight – being much lighter than the unit it replaced it is less likely to be jarred out of place when offroad.
Size – the compact size means that there is more room behind the head unit to tuck those wires in.
Ease of Use – pretty much explains itself – you’d have to be pretty dense or mostly illiterate to not be able to figure out the included directions.
FM Reception – the receiver seems to be at least as good as the one it replaced. Not much choice out where I live, so anything it does pick up is a bonus. (NOTE – haven’t tried AM yet).

    CON’s:
Clock – as mentioned in other reviews, it sure would be nice if the clock displayed when the unit was off, or you could set it to display the clock while on.
Wire Leads – man, talk about minuscule wire gauge! I like to solder my wire splices, and the wires included in the (two) connector plugs are about as small as you can get – I guess that they aren’t expecting this unit to consume or produce much power, but still….
Display – would be nice if you could set the display brightness – but to be fair, at this price point I don’t know of any units that have that option.
Sound – as mentioned above, it does not compare to an older unit with beefier output IC’s to give it a more mellow tone. It’s OK for an old Jeep with wind whistling in around the doors and all of the groans and squeaks though.

Overall, I give this unit a solid four out of five. For the price it does what it says it should, and the installation was pretty straightforward. The wire color schema matched the industry standard (but with tiny little conductors). If I have any hiccups, I will be sure to come back and amend my review!

EDITED TO ADD: I received one of the units that actually uses the two plugs instead of one as shown by the product description photos. No biggie – the color schema is the same as using a single-plug design. Red for switched power, Yellow for constant (memory, unswitched) Black for ground and Blue for power antenna or can be used to wake/trigger a properly wired Amplifier.
