***WARNING***,
I recently had to return this item to Amazon. While there is nothing wrong with the item itself, please bear in mind that the DORMAN 696-601 Air intake hose advertised on this page is designed for the 1.8L and 2.0L engines and DOES NOT fit the 1.6L Mazda Protege engine, even though the Amazon product page specifically says that it does!
The correct part for the 1.6L engine is the 696-604 air intake hose from DORMAN, which, at the time of this review is not available as a prime eligible item on Amazon.

Try this before anything else!,
Sure enough, when I took out my OEM hose, it had a giant crack in it (you couldn’t tell just by feeling it). Replacing it took me about 45 minutes (taking my time and also cleaning up the engine bay) and fixed 100% of my car’s issues. So I’d say if your Protege is experiencing similar problems and you’ve never replace the air hose, REPLACE THE HOSE FIRST. It’s easy and cheap to replace and is very likely what’s causing problems.

Better than the Original,
What to do. I did some research and found a YouTube video that showed exactly how to replace the part. Easy-peasy. 30-minute job. But videos and real life can be very different.
So I went online in search of the part. Guess what, Amazon had the best price. Some sites were double and then some, for the exact same part, manufacturer and all. Was the Amazon part cheaply made? Let’s find out. I ordered it. $27 bucks with free shipping. Received it in 4 days.
It took me 25 minutes to swap out the crumbling old part for the magnificent new part. Only tool needed was a phillips screwdriver and a pair of pliers. The old air intake hose was brittle and riddled with cracks. The new part is supple and fit easily. I think it is much better than the original. Result? Engine light is gone. Victory is mine! Does Danica Patrick need a mechanic?
Bottom line. I saved about 300 bones doing the job myself in under 30 minutes. Score a huge win for the neophyte garage mechanic.
