Urethane coating coupled with good stripping compound,
You need a coating to protect the headlights after you’ve removed the UV-damaged material. Some products use a wax, spray or paste that stays on the lights at best a few weeks. In my attempts to solve the problem, it appears that permanent spray-applied coatings (i.e. those that don’t require a reapplication) are the answer. The trick is making sure you use a coating that protects the plastic from UV damage, and that will not itself wear off over time. It needs to also be a thick enough layer to provide that protection. Just about any headlight restoration kit you can buy will only give you temporary results. Opti-lens, Plast-X, Macguires, 3M, Sylvania… all of these use non-permanent coatings requiring regular reapplication. Well, that’s tedious. Doesn’t sound like a solution to the problem, does it?
DupliColor’s kit includes a chemical stripper in a spray can which removes the faded plastic and leaves with you with undamaged plastic underneath. This stuff works better than anything I’ve ever used. It’s really, really good. It also preps the plastic for the clearcoat to adhere to the surface. Make sure you get all the stripper off with a dry rag before continuing. It doesn’t appear to be particularly hazardous – no nasty smell or anything. It takes some ‘elbow grease’ to use, so just work on a 4×4 inch area and then move on to the next area. You might have to hit the lenses two or even three times with the stripper if the lights are really bad.
Once that’s done, there’s a spar-based (smells like mineral spirits) clearcoat in the other aerosol can that goes on. I had my headlights off the car since I had other work to do, so I was able to really get a decent coating on. It’s EXTREMELY runny – so if you put anything more than a light coating on, it will just drop off the bottom of the light. I held the lights lens side down as the solvents evaporated and rotated the light around so the coating covered everywhere as heavily as possible. Even then, I had the thought that a single coating wouldn’t be thick enough to provide solid UV protection. So I waited and applied two more coats. I suppose that the mineral spirits in the clearcoat probably ‘ate’ at the previous coats to some degree so I am unsure if I really added more thickness.
The finished product looks better than any other product I’ve tried to date (which were all paste-based products like 3M, Sylvania, etc). The surface is shiny but not glassy, and has a slightly sticky feel that I suppose could catch dirt or mud a bit more. My estimate is that this will last a perhaps a year, and if the clearcoat isn’t bombproof enough, I’ll have to do it again or try something else. If it does fail, I may try Lightrite, or the SprayMax urethane clearcoat aerosol next time – Spraymax is a two-part system and will put on a thick UV-resistant clear-coat that has a built-in hardener. Car detailers often use a mineral spirits / urethane combination to protect headlights and I wonder if that’s what this product is based on.
I’ll report back in time on the product’s longer-term performance.
