The instructions (which you have to download from Honda) explicitly state that the installation is not for «do it yourself-ers». I don’t consider myself a pro, but I definitely think this was within my skill set. The hardest part of this install was cutting the weather stripping down to size. If you’re handy with a hacksaw, you’ll be just fine. You also have about a 1 inch margin of error for each cut, so don’t worry if you’re off by a few millimeters. Oh, and the weather stripping is only aesthetic (covers the luggage rails bolts), and it will be a tiny bit loose when you put it back on. No big deal.

Here are some tools you will need:

Torque Wrench. The instructions say to torque the bolts to 10 NM. There are a few torque wrenches on Amazon. I borrowed one from a neighbor.
Hack Saw. The instructions called for an air saw. A Sawzall will work, but harder to be precise.
    Torx Bits. You’ll need a T15 and a T30 bit.
Prying tool. Something to get the weather stripping off the van. I used some Nylon scraping tools from Pampered Chef. Definitely do NOT use a screwdriver, as it will chip the paint.
Metric measuring tape. I bought this one for this project: Komelon 4912IM The Professional 12-Foot Inch/Metric Scale Power Tape, Yellow It is actually a pretty cool tool.
Felt-tip pen. I used a fine point Sharpie.
Masking tape. This protects the paint when installing the cap on the middle rail post. It was absolutely necessary – it’s a pretty tight fit.

I did one extra thing which was not in the instructions: I put a drop of Loctite Blue 242 Threadlocker 6-Milliliter Tube (209728) on each of the bolts that secure the rail to the roof. I wanted to make sure the bolts don’t come out.

In all, it took me about 1.5 hours for the first side, and 1 hour for the second side. You might want to plan on 3 hours. Oh, and I felt like a Pro when I was finished.

Awesome! I needed this for a road trip vacation. I was leaving on a Sat, and I ordered this on a Wed. It came as expected on Friday with free Prime shipping. I’m pretty handy so I was not worried about installation. I was worried that there might be missing bolts like some reviews mention. But, all parts were included. The bolt bag had opened up, and the bolts were scattered in the box – so that might explain why some people are missing bolts or screws. Such an easy fix – I hope Honda reads this and addresses that – just double bag it!

Anyway, I started my install and was done in about 1 hour, maybe a little more. The instructions are easy to find on the internet – just search for the part number and you’ll find the Honda instructions. There is also a good video on Youtube – just add the word video to the search. You’ll find episode 196 from a dealer.

You start by taking off the molding and I found that was easy. You can pull it up with your fingers.
Cutting the plastic rear cover is also easy – I used a jig saw with a metal blade. The cut end will be under the new rail, so it does not matter too much. There is a faint scribe line on the back of the cover.

Next you remove the molding clips. I found this to be tricky – maybe because I was doing this in the blazing sun. Anyway, those plastic clips are on the mounting studs, and are held on my little plastic threads. Since they are discarded, I just cut them with a knife to get em off.

Next is cutting the roof molding. Its pretty easy and I used a dremel. I went through a bunch of cutting wheels because the molding has some metal inside. I probably should have just used the jig saw. Again, the cuts are hidden under the rail, so not too critical about how nice a cut you make.

Don’t forget to install the one new molding clip on each side. The rest of the cut up molding is held down by the rail. Then just lay down the molding and the rear cover that you cut earlier.

Now the fun part – bolting down the rail. There are 6 bolts on each side. I used a nut driver and turned them by hand. My hand was getting tired so if I had to do it again, I would use a ratchet. Luckily I already had a nice drill and driver set with the required T-15 and T-30 Torx drivers. When done tightening, the front and rear covers snap on easily and get one Torx screw each.

That center cover is the pain, and I used blue painters tape to protect the roof finish. It does take a good bit of pressure to snap that piece into place. In fact, I just noticed one of mine is not quite snapped in correctly, so I need to fix that. But it made the trip and is tight.

That’s it – I had a roof cargo bag tied to my new rails, along to two beach chairs. I also tied my 3 bike rear bike carrier to the rail for extra security. The bike carrier top straps don’t fit very well on the Odyssey with that black trim piece on the top of the rear door. But it all worked out and everything was secure.

If you’re looking at this, you know it’s the Honda roof rack made by Honda for your Honda. As you’d expect, it fits perfectly. I did the install this weekend with the assistance of my father in law (he has no mechanical aptitude, but can hold things as directed; I’m a mechanical engineer who works on things regularly). It took us about 2.5 hours to install this and the (not included) cross bars. The most difficult part was removing the rear plastic trim piece, but otherwise it’s straight forward. If you’re planning to do this, read the install instructions; there’s cutting involved of the gutter trim pieces and fairly low torque specs on all fasteners. I haven’t tested it’s load bearing yet, but in about 70 miles of driving have seen no noticeable difference in fuel economy or wind noise. I’m very happy with it so far.
