I’ve tried several other headlight restoration kits but this one actually worked as advertised. It was easy to use and took maybe 10 minutes total per headlight. I had to use the full kit including the sandpaper squares so this added to the time it took. The result does not create like-new headlights but the improvement is dramatic. Before, my lenses were so cloudy that I could not see the bulb inside. Now, they are clear enough that I can easily read the printing on the bulbs. I highly recommend this product.

The headlights on my 14 year old vehicle had become pretty cloudy. I tried another brand of restorer but it only helped marginally. The Mothers product did a much better job of clearing the lenses up.

The kit says it normally only needs the powerball and included polish but in extreme cases it instructs you to use the included abrasive sponge pads (wet). They have 4 grades of abrasives and you work through them from 1 to 4 and then use the powerball and polish again.

Although it did not get the lens crystal clear it was an enormous improvement and I plan on doing a re-do which I suspect will complete the job, or nearly so. When sanding with the pads it’s a bit hard to tell how much you have sanded off and I think practice would help – but how often do most people end up doing this?

The pads could be a bit larger but they were far better than the other brand I had tried before.

I would recommend this product to anyone with clouded plastic headlights.

Prior to leaving on a trip this week I decided to finally try to clean the yellowed headlamp lenses on my 2003 Toyota 4-Runner, which is my ultimate fun camping vehicle. I had considered replacing them because I suspected that these «miracle» headlamp restoration kits were nothing more than one of those late-night TV commercial hypes. However the cost of replacing the lenses is much more than I wanted to spend. So I did some research and ended up choosing the Mother’s Headlamp Restoration Kit. Here is why I did and what my results were.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING THIS PRODUCT: The two major reasons were first that the kit contains a fairly large container of restoration product compare to the other brands. I was turned off by some of the brands that stated if you have extra large headlamps you might need two kits. That could cost over fifty bucks and it would still only do two headlamps. On the day I did my restoration I did the two large headlamp lenses on my 4-Runner, the fog light lenses, the headlamp lenses on a friend’s van and the headlamp lenses on a friend’s pickup truck (pictured above) and tail light lenses and still had at least a half bottle of product left. The other reason was the simplicity of the Mother’s kit … for most headlamp lenses you just put a nickel-sized amount of product on the special applicator which is mounted to your electric drill and spin. After you polish the lenses you rub the residue off (the same as you would do if you were waxing your car) and you’re finished. If your lenses are in really bad shape you have the optional choice of using two special sponge/abrasive pads that each have two surfaces. I chose to do that on the van, which was the oldest vehicle, and it was easy to do and improved the restoration quite a bit.

RESULTS: Both my friend and I were highly skeptical. We expected a very negligible improvement. However on all three vehicles the headlamp lenses were restore to a «like new» condition. The results were truly a bit magical, and we agreed that, although the Mother’s kit is the most expensive of them all, it was very much worth it.

COMPARISON: Since I didn’t actually use any of the other brands I can only judge the Mother’s kit against the others in two ways … it appears the Mother’s kit has the most amount of product, which is great if you’re restoring more than two small headlamp lenses. And the Mother’s kit includes a very well made drill attachment, plus the sanding pads for extra worn lenses and a quality microfiber buffing rag. None of the other products I saw included all three and some of the kits were manual only (no power drill buffer) or you had to buy a separate buffing cloth.

CONS: None as far as the product itself is concerned. However here are a few tips to ensure you get the best results.

    1. Be SURE to mask the painted areas around your headlamps before starting to restore the lenses. You can easily mess up your paint job if you don’t.

    2. Have a wet rag handy. The spinning applicator disk WILL spin product all over. Wipe it up as soon as you can.

    3. Don’t use more than a small amount of product on the applicator at a time and start your drill at its lowest speed (and I would not recommend a drill that does not have variable speed). After the product starts working into the lenses gradually increase the speed to the highest speed. Do a section at a time and re-apply more product as needed.

    4. If you plan to use the sanding pads be SURE to rub off all product you applied with the applicator first. The instructions don’t emphasize this enough. Otherwise you will be clogging the sanding disk with product and making it less effective. After you use the sanding disks following the instructions be sure to clean the lenses first then repeat the original application using the drill-driven applicator pad. For badly scratched and pitted lenses following these instructions will result in like-new lenses.

The Mother’s Headlamp Lens Restoration Kit is one of the most satisfying products of its type I have ever used. I posted a couple of before/after photos of my friend’s pickup truck. Judge for yourself. By the way it is a 1995 Chevy truck so we are looking at about 16 years of yellowing and fading, all removed and restored in about 15 minutes.
