Great value!,
It is thick enough to be durable, lie flat, and provide protection, but not unnecessarily thick and heavy. I was able to trim it easily with a sharp pair of good scissors.
The central portion has a 5/32″ high lip around it. It wouldn’t keep a lot of water contained, but if you put something in there that was dripping wet, it would probably keep that contained. The area inside the lip varies in width from 36.75″ to 40″ and in length from 25″ to 27.5″. If your cargo area is smaller than 42 wide or 29.5″ long, you might not want to buy this, since you would have to trim into a 1″ border around the outside of the lip. I don’t think that would look good. Inside the lip there are raised, criss-crossed lugs to help keep things from sliding. These would also impede the movement of any liquid contained there and make it less likely to go over the lip.
For the overall dimensions of the mat, look at the photos the seller has posted. One of them shows the dimensions more clearly than anyone could describe them.
The rubber doesn’t feel very sticky, and I was concerned that it wouldn’t keep things from sliding around; but it does. I put a couple of boxes of different sizes and weights on it and accelerated, braked and cornered much harder than I normally would, and I couldn’t get the boxes to move. Without the mat, they would have been sliding all over the place.
The trim lines are very well thought out. They are so well spaced, and have some nice curves, that they almost look like a decorative pattern; so any part that you don’t trim off will still look nice. There were even trim lines along the back edge that made it easy to fit the curved edge at the rear of my cargo area.
The trim lines are grooves; but the material isn’t thinner there. Instead, the bottom of the mat under the grooves extends down below the rest of the mat by about the depth of the grooves to provide the same thickness as the rest of the mat.
Someone said it didn’t smell, and someone else said the smell went away in two to three days. Mine smelled strongly of rubber, and it took a couple of weeks for the smell to go away. And I have a lousy sense of smell. I had it stretched out in the sun and fresh air for a week, and then another week in my garage before I put it in the car…and still there was a little rubber smell. That’s just something you have to expect when you buy a new product made of rubber. It was worth putting up with the smell, because the mat is great!
If you happen to have a 2011 or newer Dodge Durango, I have put some information specific to how it fits in my 2012 Durango in a comment to this review.
