Great Unit!,
1. As of today, the release date for Apple CarPlay has not been announced. It SHOULD be days away, but I am anxious to see how it works.
2. If you are going to use AppRadio, you have to buy an additional cord to do so. It will NOT work with the USB connector (included) and your phone charger. EDIT: This additional cable costs approx $80-$100. I DID, however, spend 30 minutes between being on hold and speaking to a rep from Pioneer and confirmed that Apple CarPlay will be run through the Lightning cable and NOT this crazy setup. So no additional cables will be needed for CarPlay! Yay! He did not have any info on the release date yet though 🙁
3. Bluetooth connectivity is flawless. Finds my phone FAST every time. No issues there.
4. I can’t figure out how to get the GPS lady to stop telling me I’m going over the speed limit. I’m SURE I just need to look it up in the manual, but it’s getting really annoying. And it’s EVERY time. EDIT: Figured it out… it’s an option you can access through the settings in the Map mode.
5. This made my speakers MUCH louder and sound better than the factory unit. I’m going to go on a limb and say that I will be replacing the speakers soon because they’ll probably be blown.
6. IF YOU HAVE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS: The basic wiring harness will NOT make the controls work. You WILL have to make a separate purchase for that to happen. Unfortunately, that’s not an easy or cheap fix.
So those are my observations thus far. I had a friend install this unit in my Mazda CX-7… took about 40 minutes start to finish. Super easy. Major upgrade, I love everything (except the steering wheel control issue) about it and I’m sure I will love it even more once CarPlay is released!!

There are a few annoying CarPlay issues (no deal breakers, just annoying, but should soon be fixed – since CarPlay is really just an extension of your iPhone. Switching between the NEX apps and CarPlay is simple. CarPlay uses Siri, you never have to take your eyes off the road:
Do I have any meetings today?
Do I have any reminders today?
Whats the weather like today?
Play Kings of Leon.
How long before we reach our destination?
And so on, and so on…
CarPlay is a HUGE step forward, and for a 1.0 version release, it’s simply incredible.
With regard to GPS, either the NEX (GPS) or CarPlay Maps (A-GPS + GPS) can route, not both at the same time, but switching between the two is simple and easy. The iPhone’s A-GPS chip leverages Cell/Wifi and so is much better in the city than the NEX’s GPS, but that’s more of a statement of how effective A-GPS is when standard GPS has a problem. The NEX’s GPS is awesome on the open road and gives you all the granular detail you’d expect from a high end GPS. The iPhone combines A-GPS + GPS when possible, like when you are out of the city, but some critical info is missing (current speed; max speed; etc.). Both have their strengths/weaknesses, my only regret is you can’t switch a route between the two.
On the other hand, NEX/CarPlay can hand off every other feature. Switching from CarPlay music to NEX music is a button press, no disruption. Same in the other direction. We really want/need CarPlay maps to do this but isn’t likely to happen, given how routing is handled/calculated between the two options.
I had the shop wire USB1 for CarPlay (required port), and USB2 routes to my glove box (USB thumb drive for classical FLAC music). I keep a microSD handy with the firmware in case I’m ever on the road and need to reset the unit. Trying to figure out if there is a way to save your NEX unit settings to that disk, since the interface is kludgy – having to get back to your ideal settings from factory default is a bit painful. LOL
The AVIC-5000NEX is entry level but it’s likely going to do everything you need it to do.
