AntiFreeze / Coolants Have Become Complicated… This appears to be their DexCool formula, which works well* enough, April 11, 2014
    By

This review is from: Prestone AF2000 Extended Life Antifreeze – 1 Gallon (Automotive)
I wanted to drain/flush/refill my three autos with fresh coolant, and I had no idea how complicated antifreeze/coolants have become.

This Prestone AF2000 is the newer breed of «organic acid technology» (OAT) antifreeze/coolant. (I’m pretty certain it’s their DexCool formula, actually; this formula contains no silicates, phosphates or borates. This formula is orange in color, but that means nothing–it’s only a dye.) OAT coolants are silicate and phosphate free. Instead of silicates and phosphates, they use other compounds such as sebacate and 2-EHA (2-ethylhexanoic acid). The major benefit of this OAT compound is that it can last a very long time. (5 years, 150k miles) However, many auto manufacturers have given up on the use of 2-EHA, because it is a ‘plasticizer’, which may soften plastic over time (and therefore potentially create a leak). However, in real world use, the use of OAT antifreeze/coolants seem to work very well and do not cause leaks when properly used. Most every indication suggests that DexCool has been given a bad rap, and it does its job well enough.

Other foreign manufacturers use «hybrid organic acid technology» (HOAT). This is due to each manufacturer looking at the quality of water in their region, as well as their own research findings. European auto manufacturers use a HOAT containing silicates and other inhibitors, but no phosphates. (Silicates are known to provide quicker protection of internal components, but may not last as well over time.) Japanese auto manufacturers use a HOAT containing using phosphates and other inhibitors, but no silicates. (They have found that phosphates serve as a great preservative without harming the internal components, and have chosen to avoid silicates.) (And it’s my understanding that all Japanese auto manufacturers have sworn off 2-EHA completely.)

You could also find the old-school (traditional) «green» antifreeze (containing silicates and phosphates), but you’ll need to replace that every 2 years or so. I see no reason to even use this stuff. It doesn’t mix well with modern OAT and HOAT formulas, and it just deteriorates too quickly.

Problems start when: (a) you neglect your cooling system, and (b) when you mix different coolant compounds. Mixing a traditional (green/gold) coolant with an OAT (or even a HOAT) will require you to drain, flush, and replace within a year or two. (It’s my understanding that the compounds will react with each other and can even form a ‘sludge’ or thick mucous like substance.») So my advice (and what I do myself) is to thoroughly flush the cooling system, to stick with similar compounds that the auto manufacturers recommends, and never mix coolants. (So while Prestone says that this formula is compatible with all other brands of coolant–that’s only for short term use. (And certainly not for 5 years, 150k miles.) Long term use requires a complete drain, thorough flush, and re-fill.)

I’ve got two higher-mileage cars, so it doesn’t make sense to spend the money for the more expensive factory coolant. Mix Prestone AF2000 w/ distilled water after a drain & flush and you should be good to go. (Suggested a 50/50 mix.)

However, for cars that are truly special, I’ll actually buy the factory recommended coolant…

    ******************************
    UPDATE:

After using a 2-EHA formula in two of my cars for almost a year, I flushed both of them. The first car (honda civic) seemed to develop a head gasket leak a few months after using a 2-EHA formula; I treated that with Steel Seal & distilled water, and then went back to Honda blue coolant. The other car (toyota avalon) seem to take the 2-EHA formula better; however, once I noticed the coolant level slowly dropping, I decided to flush it out and replace it with conventional green coolant and a dose of Steel Seal for preventative purposes. Did this prestone product cause or create these problems in two aging cars? Impossible to tell, and very likely not. But the 2-EHA issue was always in the back of my mind, and it wasn’t worth dealing with the doubt. I drive asian cars & motorcycles, and I won’t be going back to a 2-EHA formula on any of them.

The green stuff!, May 19, 2013

I use this to change the coolant in my nissan car and truck. Since I can not find the oem green coolant in the states and I do not want to change color to red(toyota) or blue (honda)of the coolant in my vehicles. I have been using this for morethan 5 years and I never had a problem with prestone coolant. I think it is safe to use with nissan cars.

Antifreeze. It does not freeze., February 27, 2014

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Prestone AF2000 Extended Life Antifreeze – 1 Gallon (Automotive)
What can I say? It’s antifreeze. Hasn’t frozen yet and it’s 25 below zero here in northern wisconsin, so apparently it’s working fine. I don’t really know how you would gauge it’s performance beyond that. It just comes down to cost. Bought from amazon because it was $12.50 and cheaper than the local parts store, just went to re-order but it looks like amazon raised the price to $17 now. Going back to my local OReilly auto parts for the next antifreeze purchase i guess, and unless they lower the price, I suggest you also check locally before buying here. Is it just me, or has amazon been making a lot more big price adjustments on things lately?
