StrongArm gas charged lift supports are custom engineered and manufactured beyond industry standards to provide smooth operation and durability. The hardened chromium plated steel shaft is precision ground and polished for superior corrosion resistance and leak free sealing. The self cleaning piston assembly automatically opens during each compression cycle to keep the orifice clear of fluid contaminants and provide smoother operation and reliable performance. Most units also utilize StrongArm's patented temperature compensation module valve which ensures consistent operation even in extreme weather conditions. It does so by compensating for normal gas pressure changes caused by temperature variations. The metallic upper bushing is manufact

Great product, mediocre instructions,
Instructions could be better. Removal of the old supports and installation of the new ones depends on removal and installation of a pair of metallic retaining clips for each support. The C-shaped clips fit tightly around the cylindrical shaft, and to remove them, they must be pried-off with a screwdriver. Once you’ve removed the old supports and put on the new ones, new C-clips must be installed. However, these C-clips are tight and stiff, and do not go back on the same way they came off. It took 10-15 minutes of struggling, sweating, swearing and head scratching to figure out that they need to be pressed-on axially at the end of the cylindrical shaft. Even though I figured out how to install the first one, it was not easy to stretch-open the remaining C-clips and press them onto the cylindrical shaft…about 1-2 minutes each for the remaining clips. Admittedly, I’m not a «car guy» and do not even change my own oil, so maybe folks more mechanically inclined would do this better. Still, I’m glad I did it and would definitely do it again.

StrongArm 4557. Good Product, Easy Installation,
These supports do what they are advertised to do. I installed them in less than two minutes even without installation instructions simply by looking at the struts and figuring out that the clips at each end would pry out with a small flat blade screwdriver. Since I didn’t have a helper I put a pair of vise grips (TM) on the shaft of the old lift strut on the right side of the vehicle where it goes into the body of the strut to hold the lift gate in the open position. Once I was sure that would hold up the lift gate I pried the spring clip out at the top end of the old strut on the left side (so if the gate decided to fall I could get my hand out of the way and the strut would fall inside the vehicle). Once that was accomplished, I removed the bottom end of the old strut and snapped the new strut in place, top end first. It just pushed on the knobs after I had lifted the gate the rest of the way. Then I held the gate up with my left hand (I’m right handed) and pulled the top of the right hand lift strut off as I pried the clip back. (Easy enough to do once the thin blade is forced under the clip.) I followed that with the removal of the bottom end of the old lift strut and snapped the new one on top end first. I didn’t put the vise grips (TM) on the new strut on the left side because I didn’t want to damage the rod on the new strut which would in turn damage the seal in the strut when the lift gate was moved up and down. They work just as they should.
